Delivery methods

Same-day courier in New York City, a free handoff, or shipping anywhere in the US.

On this page

A piece travels one of three ways: a same-day courier in New York City, a handoff the two of you arrange, or a parcel shipped anywhere in the US. Which of them a piece offers is the lender's choice, made on each piece, and which of them can reach you depends on where the two of you are. The renter pays for delivery. A handoff costs nothing.

Lenders set delivery on each piece. Every listing has its own Delivery type. A new piece starts with the closet's delivery methods, and Delivery Methods in the closet policy updates every piece at once: This will update the delivery preferences for all items in your closet. Shipping needs a parcel size, so it is only switched on for pieces that have one. See Your closet settings.

Each method has its own article, because each one asks something different of you:

  • Courier delivery: same day, inside New York City, for a closet within about 15 miles of you. Jelly books the driver and neither of you sees the other's address. From $13.49 each way, quoted exactly at checkout.
  • Handoff: you meet and pass the piece over yourselves, within about 15 miles, where the lender offers it. It costs nothing.
  • Shipping: anywhere in the US, where the piece ships. You pick the speed at checkout, the lender prints a label, and you print the prepaid return label. Priced by the carrier at checkout.

What you see is what can reach you

Shop only shows you pieces that can get to you (by courier, by handoff or by shipping) from the zip you are delivering to. Change the zip from the location control, or switch from Nationwide to Local to see only what can come by courier or handoff. Before Jelly knows where you are, you see everything, each piece marked with how it travels.

A piece you open from a link that cannot reach you says why, in one line, where the button to book it would be.

Two legs, priced one at a time

A rental goes out and comes back, and those are two separate journeys: the way there is from her closet to your door, the way back is from your door to hers. Each is priced on its own and each is its own line on the total, so you see the real number for both before your card is charged. A purchase has one leg, because the piece is not coming back.

The way back does not have to match the way there. A courier out and a handoff back is an ordinary way to do it. You choose both ways at checkout, and either of you can ask from the order to switch a courier leg to a handoff until that leg is booked. Once the return is booked there is a driver on the way and nothing left to change. A shipped return is the exception: it is charged at checkout, at Ground, so the return label is paid for before you need it.

**Why the courier is a from price. Jelly asks the courier services what your leg actually costs the moment your address is known, and charges you what they quote. A short hop across the neighbourhood and a run to the far side of the city are not the same journey and are not the same price. A shipped leg is the carrier's own rate** for the speed you pick. Either way, Jelly adds nothing on top and takes no commission on a delivery leg: the number you are shown is the number the courier service or the carrier charged.

Transit coverage

A shipped piece worth $1,000 or more travels with transit coverage on both legs (coverage Jelly buys for the parcel) unless her closet waived it; its cost is its own line, at cost. The amount is on the renter's total, beside the delivery fee, before anything is charged. Under $1,000 the lender can add transit coverage anyway, from its listing.

A lender can waive it for her whole closet. Waiving takes the line off her renter's bill and leaves her carrying the risk of loss or damage in transit herself. See Your closet settings.

A courier leg and a handoff carry no insurance line. A sale that ships insures its one leg the way a rental does.

A parcel only goes with a carrier that can cover its whole value, or it is not shipped. A UPS parcel with coverage may have to be handed over at a counter rather than dropped in a box. The order says so when it does. See Shipping.

This is not a cover band and it does not change how anything else is settled. What happens when a piece comes back damaged is unchanged and is one sentence: Jelly reviews both sides' condition captures, mediates, and charges whoever is responsible. See If something goes wrong.

When a method is not offered

You will not always see all three. A method is missing when:

  • The lender does not offer it on this piece. Courier, handoff and shipping are each her switch, set on the piece.
  • It cannot reach you. Courier is New York City only and reaches about 15 miles; handoff reaches about 15 miles; shipping reaches anywhere in the US.
  • Your dates cannot carry it. A shipped piece has to be able to arrive by your start date. Where no speed can: "No shipping option can arrive by your start date. Pick a later start, or courier if you're in New York."
  • The piece is worth too much to ship. "Pieces worth over $10,000 can't be shipped."
  • No courier service will quote that leg. Where the piece ships, shipping is still there.

The reason is always written on the delivery step rather than the option simply vanishing.

Returning it, whichever way it came

By courier or by handoff, the piece is handed over on or before your end date. A courier return is booked from the order and a handoff is arranged between you. On a handoff there is no courier to confirm anything: the renter marks the piece received when it reaches her, and the lender marks it returned when it is back. See Handoff.

By shipping, print the return label on or before your end date, and drop the parcel off by the next business day after it. See Shipping.

Late fees start the day after the end date (on a shipped return, the day after the drop-off date), where the lender has them switched on. See Returning a piece and Late returns.

If the driver or the carrier is slow after you have handed the piece over, that is not a late return and no late fee applies to it.

Where Jelly runs

Same-day courier in New York City. Shipped anywhere in the US. A closet can be anywhere in the US too: outside New York City it reaches renters by shipping, and by handoff nearby.

Fees and refunds

Delivery fees are not refunded on a fit refund: the piece travelled, and that leg was real. They come back in full, both ways, on a confirmed not as described report and on a piece that arrives too late to wear. Cancellations have their own rules and what comes back is itemised on the order. See Cancelling.

If a leg goes wrong (a driver cannot get in, a pickup fails, a parcel stalls), it lands with Jelly, not with you. Raise it on the order and it goes to a person. See When a delivery goes wrong.
