Handoff

Meet the other member and pass the piece over yourselves. It costs nothing.

On this page

Where the lender offers it, the two of you meet and pass the piece over yourselves. There is no driver and there is nothing to pay for the delivery. Everything else about the rental is identical: the same dates, the same money, the same film at each handover.

Whether it is on the table

It is the lender's switch, set on each piece, or on every piece at once from her closet policy. It is for members within about 15 miles of each other, anywhere in the US. Where a listing does not offer it, or the closet is further away, the delivery step says so and a courier or shipping is how that piece travels.

Choose it at checkout. The way a piece goes out is settled when you book. There is no switching the outbound leg afterwards. The way it comes back is a separate choice, so a courier out and a handoff back is an ordinary booking. Either of you can ask from the order to switch a courier leg to a handoff until that leg is booked.

Arranging it

Message each other from the order and agree a time and a place a day or two ahead rather than on the day. See Messages and getting help.

You still only see a first name and a handle. Nobody's address is revealed by a handoff: where you meet is whatever the two of you agree, and it does not have to be either home. See Privacy and safety.

Pick somewhere public and ordinary, and go at a normal hour. If you would rather not meet a stranger at all, pick another method on that piece: a courier where you are both in New York City, or shipping where the piece ships.

Hand it to the person, or to their building staff. Do not leave a piece propped in a lobby, behind a desk nobody is at, or outside a door. A handoff is a handover.

Filming it

The film is not optional because you met in person. The lender films the piece before it goes and the renter films it within 12 hours of receiving it, exactly as on a courier rental, and the renter films it again before it goes back. Nothing is booked and no claim can be opened without them. See Condition reports and Condition reports on your piece.

The renter marks it received once the piece is in her hands. The rental starts the moment it changes hands. There is no courier to say so, so it is her tap, on the order. Until she makes it, the order still reads as getting ready. Her 12 hours to report a problem start with that tap, and the lender is paid 12 hours after it. See Getting paid.

Getting it back

On or before the end date, the same as every other method. Arrange the return between you the way you arranged the handover, and late fees start the day after the end date where the lender has them switched on. See Returning a piece.

The renter taps Hand it back once she has filmed it, and the lender marks it returned as soon as she has it: only the closet can say the piece is home. Building staff can take a piece back on the lender's behalf if she says so. See Getting your piece back.

If the other person does not turn up

Say so on the order. There is no way to send a nudge of your own and none is needed: a handoff that is not happening is a delivery problem like any other, and it goes to a person. See When a delivery goes wrong.

Not turning up is conduct, not bad luck, and repeated no-shows are handled the way everything else in the community guidelines is.

What a handoff does not change

There is no transit coverage on a handoff, because nothing is shipped and nobody else is holding the piece. A courier leg carries none either. Damage and loss are settled exactly as they are on any other rental: Jelly reviews both sides' condition captures, mediates, and charges whoever is responsible. See If something goes wrong.

Keep it on Jelly. Meeting in person is not a reason to arrange or pay for anything outside the app. Jelly cannot mediate or collect on something arranged elsewhere.
