Renting on Jelly

Paying for a rental

You are charged at booking: the rental and the delivery legs, by card, credit or both.

On this page

Your card is charged when the booking is made. Renting on Jelly is instant, so there is nothing to wait for: the price on the listing is the price. If you sent an offer instead, the charge lands the moment the lender accepts it.

What the total is made of

Itemised on screen before anything moves:

  • The rental: one price for the whole stay, up to the number of days the lender set.
  • Delivery: a courier from $13.49 each way, quoted exactly at checkout; shipping at the carrier's price for the speed you pick, with the return charged at Ground; or nothing at all for a handoff. A rental has two legs, out and back, and each is quoted and itemised on its own; a purchase has one, because the piece is not coming back.
  • Transit coverage, on a shipped piece where it applies: its own line, passed on at cost. See Shipping.
  • Your credits, if you choose to use them. Checkout asks how you want to pay: by card, or with your Jelly credit. With credit, your available balance comes off the total as its own line and the card covers whatever it doesn't. Nothing comes off until you choose it.

There is no cleaning fee, no listing fee and no service charge on top. See Payments, cards and charges.

On an offer or an extension, you choose when you send it. The charge lands when the lender says yes, so card or credit is decided at the moment you ask, and that is how you are charged.

A stay longer than the lender's period is not priced at the till. Those days are hers to approve, so Jelly sends her the dates as a Longer offer at the quoted total and the charge happens when she accepts. See Making an offer.

A promo code from a lender's closet is typed in at checkout, before you pay. See Credits, referrals and promo codes.

What the saved card is for

You agree to one sentence at checkout, and it is the same sentence on every rental: late fees at the rental price divided by seven (or by the rental period when that is longer), the replacement value if the piece is not returned, and repair or replacement for damage beyond normal wear. A purchase has its own sentence. See Buying a piece.

Those are the only charges that can follow a rental, along with an extension you asked for. Nothing else arrives after the fact. See Late returns and If you damage a piece.

A hold is not a charge

On some high-value pieces Jelly places an uncaptured authorisation on your card when the piece leaves the closet, and releases it when the piece is back. Your bank may show it as pending. No money moves.

If a payment fails, nothing is booked and the piece stays free for someone else. Update the card and try again.
