Payments, cards and charges

You are charged at booking, every line is named, and a hold is not a charge.

On this page

You are charged at the moment a booking or a purchase is confirmed (or, if you sent an offer, at the moment the lender accepts it). Every total is itemised before anything moves: rental, courier, and any credit you chose to use. See Paying for a rental.

Delivery is quoted, not a flat fee. A listing shows a from price (courier from $13.49 each way), and the exact figure is worked out at checkout, once Jelly knows the address it is driving to. A shipped leg is the carrier's own price for the speed picked, and transit coverage, where it applies, is a line of its own. A rental is two legs, out and back, quoted separately and shown as two lines; a purchase is one. Jelly charges what the courier service or the carrier charges and adds nothing to it. See Delivery methods.

Cards

Add one at checkout or in your account, and you can hold more than one. Card details are held by Jelly's payment provider rather than by Jelly.

If a card is declined, nothing is booked and nothing is held. Update it and try again.

A hold is not a charge

Jelly sometimes places an uncaptured authorisation on a card: when you send an offer, for what the booking will cost; on a high-value piece when it leaves the closet; and on the replacement value if a piece is seven days late. Your bank may show it as pending. No money is taken, and it is released. An offer's hold becomes the charge only if the lender accepts. See Making an offer.

What is never charged

A cleaning fee, a listing fee, a service fee on top of the price you saw, or a mark-up on a delivery leg. (When a cancelled rental gets back only part of its price, delivery is not refunded. See Cancelling.)

What can be charged after a rental

Only these, and you agree to them in one sentence at checkout:

  • an extension you asked for;
  • a late fee where the lender has them on;
  • the cost of repairing damage beyond normal wear;
  • the replacement value of a piece that does not come back.

See Late returns and If you damage a piece.

If money is owed and the card will not take it

Any Jelly credit you hold goes against it first. What is left becomes a balance on your account: Jelly retries at one, three and seven days, tells you the amount each time, and you can pay it in one go. While a balance stands you cannot book, make an offer, list a piece or have an extension accepted. You can always sign in, message, return what you are holding, and pay.

Refunds

They go back the way they came. Credits you spent return as credits and card money goes back to the card. When you paid with both, a refund is split between them in proportion to what each paid: half of a $30-credits, $70-card booking back is $15 in credits and $35 to the card. A fit refund is always credits. What comes back on any given cancellation or refund is itemised on the order.

Credits land on your account straight away. A card refund takes 5 to 10 business days, depending on your bank or card provider. That part is the bank's, not Jelly's, and there is nothing to chase in between. An authorisation hold that is released usually clears in a few hours, again depending on the bank.

Getting paid is the other direction and has its own article: Getting paid.
